Most software agencies widen. They take the work that comes, accumulate a portfolio across a dozen industries, and market breadth as a strength. We went the other way, and it is the decision that has shaped everything else about how Webstrail operates.

Building only for dentistry means our engineers accumulate domain knowledge instead of resetting it every project. After a decade, the team knows the practice-management landscape, the payer and clearinghouse ecosystem, how PHI obligations play out in a real build, and — more valuable than any of it — the specific ways dental software projects tend to fail. That last category is worth a great deal to a client, because most of what we prevent never becomes visible.

It also changes the conversation. We can tell a founder in week three that their premise depends on an integration that will be harder than they assumed. We can tell a DSO that the reporting problem they want solved with a dashboard is actually a data-definition problem underneath. Neither is a comfortable thing to say, and both save far more than they cost.

The trade-off is that we decline work regularly, including work we could technically do. We are comfortable with that. A narrow company that is genuinely useful to a small number of industries beats a broad one that is adequate everywhere — and in a field where the difference between a good build and a bad one is measured in years of a client's life, adequate is not much of an offer.
